By
the end of 1998,the Tibet Autonomous Region had built over 400
power stations of all kinds with the total capacity of 310,000
kilowatts, of which hydroelectricity comprises of 83%, ground-heat
16%, and thermal-power 1%. The electricity network covering
seven cities and areas in the region has been set up, of which
the Lhasa network has been connected to that in Shannan area
in joint operation, covering the central areas of Lhasa, Shannan,
and Rikaze. With the development of the electricity network,
optical fiber, micro-wave, carrier wave, star cable, wireless,
and programmed switchboard and other modern electricity and
telecommunication systems have been established, and the electricity
network, automatic safety devices, and computerized protection
have been supplemented by the construction of the second time
equipment of the automation with advanced technology. At present,
a batch of power stations are under construction, which shall
provide continuous power for the development of the social economy
in Tibet.
